The Passion Test for Kids and Teens is for empowering youth with the knowledge and the tools, that they can create the life that they choose. That they are wonderful unique individuals exactly as they are created, and that they do not need to grow up putting on 'masks' to be anyone other than who they truly are inside. To love. To have the confidence of full self expression. To really understand their thoughts, and use the tools learned that will help them combat the effects of bullying, emotional abuse, criticism, and anger, that if unchecked, may lead to behavior issues or depression.

  • The consequences of ongoing depression can be deadly. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people ages 15 to 24. Even more shocking, it is the sixth leading cause of death among children ages 5-14. The National Institute of Mental Health also reports that teenage girls are more likely to develop depression than teenage boys (NIMH, 2000).

The statistics on teen depression are sobering. Studies indicate that one in five children have some sort of mental, behavioral, or emotional problem, more than one third of children are, or have been, affected by depression (and that includes children under the ages of six years); and that one in ten may have a serious emotional problem. Childhood depression is going up in numbers quite dramatically. Harvard Medical Center studies say that it is rising by a rate of about 20 percent per year. That means that every twenty years, childhood depression rates are nearly doubling. It is estimated that over 70% of the children and teens that struggle with this emotional turmoil, are doing their best to make it to adulthood with no help.

Many blame the economy for making
  parents more stressed and more
likely to behave in an abusive or
  negligent manner. Far more than
  physical abuse, subtle emotional
  abuse and constant citicism
tends may lead to deep depression
in children. This type of abuse seems
to create a subtle depression and
anger in children that is not easily
  tamed.

If your child or adolescent seems to be experiencing feelings of sadness, hopelessness, despair, worthlessness, or lack of interest in usual activities this may be a symptom of depression. Parents should also be concerned if their teen is having trouble concentrating, cannot make a decision, and has shown a drop in academic performance. Children and Teens do not have the verbal skills of adults, and often cannot express what they are feeling in a way that allows parents to identify depression as the issue. Physical symptoms such as  headaches, muscle aches, low energy, sudden change in appetite or weight, insomnia or hypersomnia may be physical manifestations of depression. A depressed child or teen may also seem restless, irritable, anxious, or belligerent. They may be having trouble getting along with peers, siblings, and authority figures. Teachers may report the child is skipping classes or not paying attention in class. Your child might start paying less attention to his or her appearance and hygiene, or may seem to spend much more time alone, possibly even dropping out of the usual activities they enjoy (sports, hobbies, music lessons).

The Passion Test 4 Kids and Teens is helping to create youth who are happy and engaged, energized and on-fire. We are empowering them, by enabling them to have clarity about who they really are, and what is really important to them. Youth who have the skills and tools to master life's ups-and-downs, who are loving and open to love, are more resistant to the external pressures children face growing up. It's about LOVING our kids and giving them the best possible tools.
